BackGIB and Morooj Announce Strategic Partnership to Plant 21,000 Mangrove Trees in the Eastern Province

Collaboration unveiled as part of Saudi Environment Week, focused on driving action and investment to preserve natural resources and expand green spaces
Gulf International Bank - Saudi Arabia (GIB Saudi Arabia) today announced the signing of a strategic partnership with the Vegetation Cover Development Foundation, Morooj, committing SAR 900,000 over three years to support the planting of more than 21,000 mangrove trees in the Eastern Province.
Aligning directly with the goals of the Saudi Green Initiative, and the sustainability objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, the partnership underscores both parties’ ongoing commitment to supporting efforts aimed at enhancing environmental sustainability through private sector action and a dedication to impactful corporate social responsibility.
The announcement coincides with Saudi Environment Week 2025, organised by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture under the theme “Our Environment is a Treasure.” The week features broad participation from all three sectors — public, private, and non-profit — as well as individuals, and reflects the Kingdom’s ongoing commitment to preserving the environment and natural resources, and reinforces its leadership through impactful programmes, most notably the Saudi Green Initiative.
Commenting on the occasion, Mr. Khaled Abbas, CEO of GIB Saudi Arabia, said, "This partnership with Morooj reflects GIB’s dedication to environmental stewardship and supporting the Kingdom’s ambitious sustainability goals through the Saudi Green Initiative, and in alignment with Vision 2030. We believe that collaborations like this are essential to fostering cooperation between the public and private sectors to protect natural resources, promote biodiversity, and expand green spaces throughout the Kingdom."
Adding, Eng. Wael Bousheh, CEO of the Vegetation Cover Development Foundation, Morooj, said, “The timing of this partnership with GIB Saudi Arabia is both meaningful and symbolic, reflecting the true spirit of the week — uniting sectors in shared responsibility for the environment.
By restoring and expanding mangrove ecosystems in the Eastern Province, we are not only preserving one of the Kingdom’s natural treasures, but also actively supporting the national agenda for sustainability, biodiversity, and climate resilience as outlined in the Saudi Green Initiative. We are proud to work alongside the Bank to help advance the Kingdom’s environmental objectives through practical, impactful action.”
